Cloth Table Linens, What You Need To Know

What Are Table Linens?

Table linens are dining table linens (table cloths) used to make tables inviting, formal and elegant. They are not only timeless and stylish, but also reflect the host style, taste and creativity.

In general, the term “table linen” refers to the tablecloth, but it also refers to napkins, table runners and placemats.

Is Table Linen a Fabric?

At one time the term table linen referred specifically to cloth table linens that were made of cotton or a cotton blend tablecloth. Nowadays the term applies to any tablecloth fabric; cotton blends, polyester, satin, nylon, jute and spandex; to name just a few fabrics. Premier Table Linens has been selling table linens since 2010 and our fabrics catalog is in continuous growth.

More and more frequently we see new fabrics with unique characteristics and all fall under “table linens” as far as they are used to manufacture tablecloths, table runners or napkins. A great example is our recent addition: the Mirage Basketweave fabric, which is being very popular because in addition to having texture, the over-and-under weave technique used achieves a unique pattern by having the threads cross each other in alternating directions. This makes the Basketweave tablecloths stunning and they drape beautifully.

Moreover, with all the recent advancements in the textile industry, many table linens look like cotton tablecloths but actually are high quality faux cotton linens for durability. A perfect example of this is the Panama Table Linen and the Havana Linen Collection. Feel free to follow the link and check them out.

Sizing… the neverending nightmare

It is a common motto in the industry: “measure twice and cut once”. All our table linens are cut and sewn to measure, so it is very important that you know the dimensions you need for your table. Even when we serve a lot of different customers from homeowners to schools and government, very often we see repeated table sizes, so we can talk from experience that there are some standard table sizes that make some tablecloth sizes to be much more popular than others. You should always measure your table prior to buying the table linen, let us show you the most frequently used:

What size linen for a 60” round table?

On a 60” round table, an 84” round table linen will drape the table 12”. A 90” round for a half way down drop and a 120” round to completely cover the table to the floor.

What size linen for a 72” round table?

On a 72” round table, a 102” round size will drape the table 15”. A 132” round to completely cover the table to the floor.

What size for a 6 foot rectangular table?

Usually a 6 foot table is 30” wide and 30” high, therefore a 60” x 108” table linen can be used for a dining drop, which is falling just above diners laps. Or you could use a 90” x 132” to completely drape the table to the floor.

What size for an 8 foot table?

This is another of the most popular table sizes. For an standard 8 foot table you could use 60” x 120” table covers for a dining drop, or a 90” x 156” to completely drape the table to the floor.

On these rectangular tables, if the table linen is completely draping the table, there are two choices for the corners: rounded or squared. Rounded corners are used so the cloth does not puddle on the floor at the corners, this is the most used when getting a tablecloth for a home dining room. The square corners create a puddle in the corners which is quite popular for weddings as it captures attention on the table decoration.

Other Sizes?

Here is a short, informative blog on how to determine what size to purchase.

It is titled oval tablecloth sizes but the way to calculate applies to any shape table.
