Table Runners

There are many uses for table runners. Traditionally, the table runner goes horizontally down the center of the table. You can place it directly on the table without any other table linens or on top of a tablecloth. Table runners are not only stylish but they also add a layer of texture, depth and color to make the tablescape really look stunning.

Should a table runner be the same or different color than a tablecloth?

There is no right or wrong answer. A few customers select the same fabric and color for both the tablecloth and the table runner. Others will select the same color but in different fabrics. However, the majority of customers choose different colors. Either completely different colors that contrast to make the tablescape “pop”, or a lighter color tablecloth with a deeper shade of the same color. This subtle combination creates a delicate, refined contrast. For Fall and Thanksgiving, using a fall tablecloth color and another fall color for the runner is beautiful. The same thing applies for the holidays.

How long?

Again, there is no right or wrong table runner length.A table runner that only covers the top of the table can be as beautiful as a table runner that drapes down the table. With a drop, we see table runners that come down the sides 6” to 15” inches as well as other table runners that are the same length as the table cloth. For formal events such as weddings, we do suggest the table runner come down 12” to 15” or be the same length as the table linen.

At weddings, with velvet fabric in particular, it is stylish and romantic to have the runner puddle on the ground.

It is all a matter of personal preference. Our best advice is that whatever length you decide on, that all the runners at your event have the same drop.

How wide?

The industry standard width is 12” to 13” wide. At Premier Table Linens, our standard table runners are 13” wide. Some customers prefer 18” or even wider table runners. It allows them to create a ruffled effect with the extra width, especially when using velvet or organza fabrics.

Another example of where a wider table runner is appropriate is when using them to serve as placemats. In this case, instead of the runner being 13” wide and going down the center, you will want it to be 16” to 18” wide on both sides or the rectangular table. You also have the option to use them as placemats on round tables by placing two runners crossed on the table.

Should I purchase table runners with square ends or pointed ends.

Premier Table Linens recommends square ends. The reason being that pointed ends can pucker, and this issue will not happen with square ends..

Why are some of the runners are only sold in sets of four or six and others are sold individually?

Because of the individual fabric’s yield, those you need to purchase in sets of four or six. This is not an issue for weddings and special events, since it is multiple tables and the consumer is purchasing bulk table runners. For home decor and other tablescapes where it is less than 4 tables, we do have numerous fabrics in which we pre-make the runners and then are able to sell them individually.
